How is Drawn Seamless Aluminum Tubing Made?

Drawn seamless aluminum tubing is made for situations where a weld seam might weaken the finished product. Another name for drawn seamless aluminum tubing is drawn structural tubing because of the added strength from this manufacturing method.

The Difference Between Extruded and Seamless Drawn Aluminum Tubing

Seamless drawn aluminum tubing is essentially an extruded aluminum tube that is processed a second time. This works by extruding an aluminum tube, and before the tube has time to cool, it is pulled or drawn through a second die to produce a seamless tube at the predetermined size. The warm extruded aluminum makes this process possible and creates stronger and higher quality tubing than standard extruded aluminum tubing.

High-quality drawn seamless aluminum tubing ready for use

Another name for this process is cold drawing because the tubing is not at the full temperature required for standard aluminum extrusion. It takes full advantage of aluminum’s plasticity to create the drawn tubing. Drawn tubing works better for handling pressurized liquids and gases.

What is Seamless Drawn Aluminum Tubing Used For?

Seamless drawn aluminum tubing is not just good for pressurized liquids and gases. It allows the production of items such as:

  • Aluminum bats for baseball and softball
  • Antennas
  • Bed frames
  • Cooking pots and other kitchenware
  • Crutches
  • Extension poles
  • Fuel lines
  • Fuselages
  • Hydraulic lines for aircraft
  • Seat frames
  • Tent poles
  • Telescoping tubing
  • Wheelchair frames

Pros and Cons of Seamless Drawn Aluminum Tubing

You already know about the improved strength and resistance to deformation and internal pressure. But another big pro for drawn tubing is that it has a nice uniform appearance when it has been anodized and finished. This makes it a preferred method for household and medical products and any other items where a clean, polished appearance is essential.

The major con of seamless drawn aluminum tubing is that producing it is a much slower process than that for standard extruded aluminum tubing. Because of the longer production process, drawn tubing is typically more expensive.
